What is a Paralegal?

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, paralegals (sometimes called legal assistants) "support lawyers by performing a variety of tasks, such as maintaining and organizing files, conducting legal research, and drafting documents" (2024).

Paralegal Studies Programs at UCNJ

UCNJ offers two Paralegal Studies Programs: A Paralegal A.S. and a Paralegal CT.A. 

According to their respective program outlines, by the end of each program students should reach the following objectives:

Paralegal A.S.

  • Perform factual research incorporating computer technology;
  • Prepare forms, pleadings, legal instruments, and litigation documents;
  • Identify, analyze and evaluate legal issues;
  • Write clearly and accurately according to the standards of the legal profession;
  • Perform legal research using library resources and computer technology;
  • Evaluate the various issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Paralegal field. 

Paralegal Studies, CT.A.

  • Identify, analyze and evaluate legal issues;
  • Perform legal research using library resources and computer technology;
  • Perform factual research incorporating computer technology;
  • Write clearly and accurately according to the standards of the legal profession;
  • Prepare forms, pleadings, legal instruments, and litigation documents.
