What is AI Ethics?
"Ethics is a set of moral principles which help us discern between right and wrong. AI ethics is a multidisciplinary field that studies how to optimize AI's beneficial impact while reducing risks and adverse outcomes" (What is AI ethics?, n.d.).
Why is it Important?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been proven to be a powerful and useful technology with numerous benefits, from accurately solving problems, completing tasks efficiently, cutting costs, and much more. However, the harms and risks that come along with it cannot be ignored. AI ethics is imperative for ensuring that this technology is developed and used in a way that promotes fairness, equity, and privacy. Without AI ethics, the potential for risks and harms are greater for all.

AI Accountability is important when preparing for when something may go wrong. Holding creators and developers of AI tools accountable for their actions can help prevent harms from happening and will build a trust between the user and the tools that have been created because they know who is responsible. Accountability also allows for transparency of design and processes.

Environmental impacts of AI include but are not limited to high-energy consumption and pollution. Without regulation, these environmental harms will have a long lasting impact on the world and its systems.

AI tools can generate highly realistic human-like content such as text, images, audio, and video. Misinformation can often arise from biased or false training data or through malicious use. AI-generated content can perpetuate or create content based on unreliable or uncredible sources. This can lead to the spread of false information, such as deepfakes and the spread of misinformation through text without credible sources to back it up. All of this content can be difficult to distinguish from reality.
