Citation Guides for AI

Creating a reference for ChatGPT and other AI Tools/Models:

"Generative AI tools like ChatGPT generate text in response to parameters entered by the user. AI generated content is an example of a nonrecoverable unpublished source...Instead of a reference list entry, provide an  acknowledgment after the reference list detailing which tools were used, to what extent, and descriptions of how the information was generated, including the exact wording of prompts used."

Format:

Name of AI Tool, type of communication, Month DD, YYYY

  • Name of the AI Tool
  • Type of communication (response to a question, online chat)
  • Date (Month Day, Year) 

Examples:

ChatGPT, response to question from author, September 05, 2024

In an online chat with ChatGPT (September 05, 2024) ...

In response to the question ..., ChatGPT (September 05, 2024) gave the following response ...

Acknowledgement (Appendix)

Include a record of each question/ prompt, the date and the response in an appendix after the reference list.

Creating a reference for ChatGPT and other AI Tools/Models:

Information provided by APA Style Guide

Format:

Author of the AI tool/model. (year, if given). Title of the AI tool/model (month and day accessed) [Provide a descriptor of the tool]. URL for the source

  • Author: The author of the AI tool/model that you are citing
  • Date: The year of the version that was used
  • Title: Italicized name of the AI tool/model
  • Source: The URL for the AI tool/model

Examples:

OpenAI. (2024). ChatGPT (Jul 15 version) [Large Language Model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

Microsoft. (2024). Copilot (Mar 20 version) [Large Language Model]. https://copilot.microsoft.com/

 

Creating a reference for ChatGPT and other AI Tools/Models:

"You do need to credit ChatGPT and similar tools whenever you use the text that they generate in your own work. But for most types of writing, you can simply acknowledge the AI tool in your text (e.g., “The following recipe for pizza dough was generated by ChatGPT”)"

Format:

1. AI Tool Name, response to “Full Text of Prompt,” Company Name, Date of Prompt, URL.

Example (including information about the prompt):

Creating a reference for ChatGPT and other AI Tools/Models:

  • "cite a generative AI tool whenever you paraphrase, quote, or incorporate into your own work any content (whether text, image, data, or other) that was created by it"
  • "acknowledge all functional uses of the tool (like editing your prose or translating words) in a note, your text, or another suitable location"

Format:

Author, Title Source, Title of Container, Version, Publisher, Date, Location. 

  • Author: Do not treat the AI tool as the author.
  • Title Source: Describe what was generated by the AI tool. This may involve including information about the prompt in the Title of Source element if you have not done so in the text.
  • Title of Container: Use the Title of Container element to name the AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT).
  • Version: Name the version of the AI tool as specifically as possible.
  • Publisher: Name the company that made the tool.
  • Date: Give the date the content was generated.
  • Location: Give the general URL for the tool.

Examples:

1. “Describe the symbolism of the green light in the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald” prompt. ChatGPT, 13 Feb. version, OpenAI, 8 Mar. 2023, chat.openai.com/chat.

Citing Creative Visual Works: If you are incorporating an AI-generated image in your work, you will likely need to create a caption for it following the guidelines in section 1.7 of the MLA Handbook. Use a description of the prompt, followed by the AI tool, version, and date created.

Examples:

1. Fig. 1. “Pointillist painting of a sheep in a sunny field of blue flowers” prompt, DALL-E, version 2, OpenAI, 8 Mar. 2023, labs.openai.com/.
