Evaluating Web Sources

When choosing a website for research it's important to find a credible source. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a web source for your research:

Make sure it is current!  If there are dead links or old information, do not use it.

Who wrote it and why?  Look for an About Us.  Most websites have a mission or purpose and the good ones let you know what it is.

What makes the author (or organization) important?  Most professors will be happy if you cite information from the website of a government agency such as the FBI or well-known non-profit such as the American Civil Liberties Union BUT NOT from Joe Schmoe's personal website or blog.

If you're not sure if the website is reliable, talk to a librarian or your professor.
