Climate Change 101

How does Climate Change Affect Human Health?

As stated by the US Environmental Protection Agency, Signs of Climate Impact due to Climate Change are seen in (1) Increased temperature; (2) Precipitation extremes; (3) Extreme weather events; and (4) Sea level rise. Climate Impacts can be linked to changes in levels of Human exposure, which then can lead to negative effects on health.

Human Exposure issues related to these elemental changes in climate are (1) Extreme heat; (2) Poor air quality; (3) Reduced food and water quality; (4) Changes in infectious agents; and (5) Population migration.

From Exposure to Climate Changes on Earth, certain Health Outcomes have been monitored: (1) Sun/Heat-related illness like Heat Stroke or Skin Cancer; (2) Cardiopulmonary illnesses like Asthma, Heart Attack.; (3) Food-, water-, and vector-borne disease like Lyme Disease or Zika Virus; (4) Mental health consequences and stress also occur in Humans exposed to Climate Changes.
