An "Eastern Religion" refers to religious faiths that originated in areas such as India, Japan, and China - as well as other Asian countries. Hinduism is often referred to as the oldest Eastern religion/belief system (Britannica, 2022). Religion and Spirituality go hand and hand in most Eastern belief systems, with some systems incorporating philosophy more than actual religious beliefs. But all can be seen as a spirituality that contains specific beliefs, values, culture, and lifestyles. Religion and belief systems in the Eastern world are very much ingrained in daily life, more so than in the West. The practices are not just about worship - and some may not even "worship" in the way Americans understand the meaning of the word.
The most common religions in the East are Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism. Hinduism is known to be the oldest religion that originated in Asia (Chandrasekhar et al., 2024), and - like most Eastern religions and belief systems - has a rich history that includes many centuries of text and oral traditions.
Other Eastern Religions and belief systems include Chinese Folk Religions, Baha'i, Sikhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Shinto, Taoism/Daoism, and Confucianism. Because of the secular notion of some of these belief systems, they may sometimes be referred to as "philosophies" instead of "religions."
