Hispanic Heritage Month Resources: Music, Art and Government

Music

Cuban Music:

"The Caribbean island of Cuba has developed a wide range of creolized musical styles, based on its cultural origins in Europe and Africa. Since the nineteenth century its music has been hugely popular and influential throughout the world. It has been perhaps the most popular form of world music since the introduction of recording technology.

Mariachi Music

"Mariachi is a genre of music that originated in Guadalajara, in the State of Jalisco, Mexico. It is an integration of stringed instruments highly influenced by the cultural impacts of the historical development of Western Mexico. Throughout the history of mariachi, musicians have experimented with brass, wind, and percussion instruments."

Art

Most Influential Latin American Artists of the 20th Century

"This list of artists reveals that many of the groundbreaking, influential artists from Latin America in the 20th century were not tethered to the region but, in fact, incredibly global."

Government

Hispanic-American Representatives, Senators, Delegates, and Resident Commissioners

"This table is supplemented by an interactive map of the United States and is based on information drawn from the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress.
