Evaluating Web Sources

When choosing a website to use in your research it's important to find a credible source. Remember that the internet is open to everyone and not every website is reliable. Just because a website appears at the top of a Google search doesn't make it reliable.

Here are few things to consider when choosing a web source for your research:

  • What can the URL tell you? For example, is it an educational, nonprofit, commercial, or government site?
  • Who wrote the page? Is he, she, or the authoring institution a qualified authority?
  • Is it dated? Current, timely?
  • Is information cited authentic?
  • Does the page have overall integrity and reliability as a source?
  • What's the bias?
  • Could the page or site be ironic, like a satire or a spoof?
  • If you have questions or reservations, how can you satisfy them?
